| A Generative Theory of Relevance Posted: 12 Dec 2009 09:16 PM PST  A Generative Theory of Relevance Product Description A modern information retrieval system must have the capability to find, organize and present very different manifestations of information – such as text, pictures, videos or database records – any of which may be of relevance to the user. However, the concept of relevance, while seemingly intuitive, is actually hard to define, and it’s even harder to model in a formal way. Lavrenko does not attempt to bring forth a new definition of relevance, nor provide arguments as to why any particular definition might be theoretically superior or more complete. Instead, he takes a widely accepted, albeit somewhat conservative definition, makes several assumptions, and from them develops a new probabilistic model that explicitly captures that notion of relevance. With this book, he makes two major contributions to the field of information retrieval: first, a new way to look at topical relevance, complementing the two dominant models, i.e., the classical probabilistic model and the language modeling approach, and which explicitly combines documents, queries, and relevance in a single formalism; second, a new method for modeling exchangeable sequences of discrete random variables which does not make any structural assumptions about the data and which can also handle rare events. Thus his book is of major interest to researchers and graduate students in information retrieval who specialize in relevance modeling, ranking algorithms, and language modeling. download |

By the time of the filming, Dorian had won The Mr. Olympia title four times, and would later go on to win it twice more, in 1996 and 1997 respectively. At the time of the video, Dorian had been training for 13 or 14 yrs at the time (since 1983) at Temple Gym in England and had been competing since 1985. His early contest history was good; at 226 pounds he was then spoken of as a future Mr. Olympia winner. By the time of the 1990 Night of Champions he was 235 pounds in and September of 1991, he placed second to the unbeatable Lee Haney in the Mr. Olympia Contest. The 1992 Mr. Olympia Contest marked Dorian’s first win and the beginning of a streak. He then won between 1993-1995, and after a biceps tear in 1994, he still won. In 1995 he won again, as the heaviest man on stage. In 13 years in bodybuilding, Dorian Yates gained 70 lbs of shredded mass. Dorian’s training was a unique style, of the high intensity variety created by Mike Mentzer. Each body part is trained every six days using a four day split. two days on, one day day off, repeat. HIT – blood and guts – that’s what Dorian was all about. He performed one set with maximum intensity each exercise, and several warmup sets preceeding it, then one maximum set to failure and beyond. No ego lifting, no sloppy form. Dorian’s form was textbook perfect, something which would normally prevent injury, but Dorian’s high intensity made him victim of several injuries. Sometimes you can’t have it all. Dorian’s training is included below, as well as pictures to go along with the description of his workouts. Some screencaps are shown and then the end credits run. Overall, the DVD was very well done – made in grainy black and white to highlight the intensity of the training shown. Few other bodybuilders have displayed the work ethic that Dorian has in training DVDs, although there are a few noteworthy, one of the most similar in terms of style would be that of Markus Ruhl as seen in his training video – Made in Germany. This DVD is one of the most popular and in many ways has yet to be beat. It is also the only bodybuilding video Dorian produced. It is worth having as part of any bodybuilding video and DVD collection, and especially for any fan of Dorian Yates. This tutorial is geared for intermediate Maya users. If you’re into mechanical robots then this tutorial will be a lot of fun. We will begin by using image planes of the side and front views. The modeling techniques used will be shaping in nurbs, converting to polygons to add details, and then into sub’ds to define the final shapes.
Mech Warrior – Tutorial description:
This tutorial is geared for intermediate Maya users. If you’re into mechanical robots then this tutorial will be a lot of fun. We will begin by using image planes of the side and front views. The modeling techniques used will be shaping in nurbs, converting to polygons to add details, and then into sub’ds to define the final shapes.
When the robot is finished we then move toward preparing our model for texturing. We do this by laying out the UV’s for all the separate parts of the body to make them flat so we can get a clean UV snap-shot for our painted textures. Tools covered in the layout section include planar map, cylindrical map, and automatic map, as well as move and sew UV’s. After the UV’s are finished and your snap-shot is taken we jump into a paint program to start adding color and texture to our model.
You will learn how to use layers for different areas as well as how to stain and chip up certain parts of the body, like the head and torso, for a more aged and scratched look. The last section covers how to texture a few of the nurbs surfaces of our character, such as the tubes, using Maya built-in shading networks. Once our character is all textured we will begin rigging by adding a skeleton to the geometry as well as parent parts of the body to certain joints so that the body parts move with the new skeleton. After our Robot has his joints we will begin adding Ik handles and more in-depth animation controls like foot rolls, as well as finger controls. The last stage of our tutorial covers basic key-frame animation where we move our robot in 3D space instead of a cycle where we would animate him in place. He will walk a bit and then pick up a small object. This will get you familiar with thinking about how the body of our robot would move and counter-balance to get more life-like animation.
